The paper proposes novel statistical tools to evaluate the reliability of SDH networks on which ATM or IP is implemented. The proposed methods are based on some modifications of the well-known Importance Sampling technique. With the newly developed algorithms, 'real time' reliability analysis becomes possible, which is of great importance for evaluating complex network resilience schemes, such as adaptive protection and traffic rerouting techniques. Thus, the results contribute to the creation of highly protected digital communication networks.
